Newer versions of Ubuntu such as 12.04 LTS include a new interface for Gnome called Unity. I personally prefer the older interface or "classic" Gnome at least for the time being. In case you're in the same boat as me just open up a terminal window and run:
.......@her###:~$ sudo aptitude update
.......@her###:~$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
Log out and then before logging back in again, click on the Ubuntu logo near the username and then select GNOME Classic.
.......@her###:~$ sudo aptitude update
.......@her###:~$ sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
.......@her###:~$ sudo aptitude install gnome-session-fallback
Log out and then before logging back in again, click on the Ubuntu logo near the username and then select GNOME Classic.
