HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE. What a better way to start the new year than by cleaning up your hard drive from all of the duplicate files you have saved over the years. Most people begin this process by deleting leftover temporary files. That’s sensible enough and tools like CCleaner make the process quick and easy and can recover a surprising amount of real estate. This is just the start though, if you haven't checked your system lately then it might also be worth scanning it for duplicate files, which may also be wasting a great deal of space.
DupScout
DupScout is a powerful, fast and easy-to-use duplicate files finder utility allowing one to detect and cleanup duplicate files on local disks, networked computers and NAS storage devices. Users are provided with multiple product versions ranging from an easy-to-use free version to an enterprise-grade version capable of detecting and removing duplicates in an automatic and unattended mode.
Getting started in quick and simple. Choose the folder/s which you'd like to scan for duplicate files (DupScout calls these "Input Directories"). On the other hand if you want to scan you entire system drive, choosing C:\ drive will scan all the files in this drive as well as all of its sub-folders. Clicking Search then kicks the scanning process off, and you can simply sit back and watch as the list of duplicates appears.
The final report highlights all your duplicate files, with those wasting the most space at the top of the list. But there are many other options available: you can sort the list by file type, viewing only duplicate music or movie files; by file size, extension, access, modification or creation time, and more.
And best of all, there are a whole host of options available for processing the duplicates. So you can delete some, replace others with links, compress them, move them all to a folder somewhere, and so on.

- Pros: One of the major advantages DupSout has over its rivals is the speed at which it finds duplicates. In comparison to some of the other duplicate file finders I found DupScout to be over 26% quicker.
- Cons: There are always going to be risks involved in deleting duplicate files this way as sometimes duplicate executable files (DLLs and son on) are necessary for Microsoft applications to run properly. Dup Scout tries to reduce this by excluding your \Windows and \Program Files folders from its scans, but you may still have some critical executable's stored elsewhere. If you’re in any doubt about the safety of removing a particular duplicate, just leave it alone: freeing up a few megabytes of data isn’t worth the risk of breaking an application (or your entire system).
- Available editions: Please note, this free version of DupScout can scan a maximum of 500,000 files and 2TB of storage space. If you need more, prices start at $10 for the commercial Pro version of the program which extends these limits considerably, and adds a host of other features.
- Used for: Used for all Microsoft Operating Systems.
- Installation: Installation is fairly simple and mostly automated once you have downloaded the .exe file from http://www.dupscout.com/downloads.html.
